I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Punta Cana several times over the past decade. Once, the visit was a weeklong stay to celebrate my sister’s destination wedding, and most recently it was on a media visit to get to know Palladium Hotel’s luxury all-inclusive’s TRS Turquesa and TRS Cap Cana.
One thing you soon realize is that a vacation in Punta Cana can be as relaxing or as thrilling as you like, there’s lots to do! And since, for the most part, visitors stay at gated all-inclusive resorts, preferring not to rent a car, it’s easiest to take advantage of all that the resort offers, including turning to its Excursions Desk to book day trips.
I’ve relied on hotel services myself, but I’ve also rented a car to get to attractions on my own. It’s definitely more stress-free to do the former, but not so difficult (especially if you speak Spanish) to do the latter.
Here’s a guide on what to do in Punta Cana, with my personal experience to show you how to enjoy the most amazing vacation in this Dominican Republic resort town. I’ve also answered a number of frequently asked questions and shared travel tips for making the journey as pleasant as the destination.

What Does Punta Cana Mean?
“Punta Cana” is a Spanish phrase that translates to “Cana Point” in English. The term “punta” in Spanish is used to denote a geographic point or a cape, and “cana” refers to the cane palms that abundantly grow in this region. Hence, Punta Cana, known for its picturesque white-sand beaches lined with swaying cane palms, aptly gets its name from its beautiful natural landscape.
Where Is Punta Cana located?
Punta Cana is located on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, a nation that shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district in La Altagracia, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic.
Punta Cana is a popular beach resort area, far different from the bustling capital city of Santo Domingo, located 124-miles (2-3-hours-by car) away.
What Airlines Fly To Punta Cana?
Given its popularity as a tourist destination, numerous airlines fly to Punta Cana. All the major US airlines fly there, and many US airports offer direct, nonstop flights. This includes Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, and American Airlines. And you can find direct flights from Dallas, Chicago, and many East Coast cities.
Most flights are short and relatively inexpensive; currently, Frontier has 2.5-hour flights from Miami clocking in at under $80.
Do You Need A Passport To Go To Punta Cana?
If you’re traveling to Punta Cana from outside the Dominican Republic, you will need a valid passport. This includes travelers from the United States, Canada, and most other countries. It’s essential to ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. that it has at least one blank page available for the entry stamp, and that it’s valid for six months beyond your planned departure date.
All visitors are required to fill out an E-Ticket for entry and departure, and it’s necessary to fill it out online before checking in for your flight.
Travel Tip For Painless Punta Cana Arrivals & Departures
If you don’t like waiting in lines, then you’ll want to splurge for the Punta Cana Airport Fast Track. Getting through the Customs and Immigration lines can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, but if you book online, you can avoid this at both Arrivals and Departures.
It’s a steep price for both, and I’m not sure that it’s worth it for arrivals. The line was long, but it moved pretty quickly. However, for departures, it’s more than worthwhile, especially if you combine it with access to the Punta Cana Departure Lounge.
It’s the only departure lounge at Punta Cana Airport, and it’s one of the best anywhere, if only for unparalleled views of flight departures.
After checking in your luggage, proceed to the VIP Fast Track office. You’ll find it on your way to the Customs and Immigration lines. There, an assistant will walk you through Customs after which you can make your way to the elevators that take you to the Departure Lounge.
At the Departure Lounge, there’s a restroom with showers, a full buffet and bar, and a pool deck with a fantastic view of departing planes.
Note that the online price for this service is steep, but worth the expense if you want to be assured of availability. I actually learned about it as I was leaving the country, so I paid the walk-in fee (about $40 for VIP Fast Track plus $50 for the lounge.) And even the lounge fee can be waived if you have an affiliate membership in Priority Pass, Dragon Pass, or Lounge Key.
Renting A Car In Punta Cana
Renting a car in Punta Cana can provide you the flexibility and freedom to explore this Caribbean paradise at your own pace. While public transportation and taxis are available, having your own set of wheels allows you to venture off the beaten path and discover the hidden gems that this vibrant island has to offer.
When you arrive at Punta Cana International Airport, you’ll find a variety of international and local car rental agencies such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, and local companies. Online booking in advance is recommended to ensure the availability of your preferred vehicle and to possibly secure better rates.
The range of vehicles varies from compact cars suitable for city driving to SUVs perfect for tackling some of the island’s rougher terrains. Most agencies also offer optional extras such as GPS, child seats, and additional driver cover.
Before renting a car in Punta Cana, be aware of a few key points. Driving in the Dominican Republic can be an adventure in itself due to local driving customs and sometimes poorly maintained roads (major roads are much improved now, but beach or mountain roads can be a different story.)
Be prepared for aggressive driving habits from locals, such as sudden lane changes, rare use of indicators, and disregard for speed limits. In particular, look out for the little motorbikes that weave in and out of traffic.
Ensure that your rental agreement or credit card includes full insurance coverage, and thoroughly inspect your vehicle before leaving the lot to avoid disputes over damage when you return the car. Also, keep in mind that the legal driving age in the Dominican Republic is 18, but most car rental agencies require drivers to be at least 25.
While renting a car in Punta Cana does require some planning and caution, it can truly enrich your travel experience, turning it from a typical tourist trip into an exciting journey of discovery.
When Is The Best Time To Go To Punta Cana?
The best time to visit Punta Cana largely depends on your preference for weather, crowd size, and pricing.
- Weather: Punta Cana has a tropical climate, so it’s warm throughout the year. However, the most pleasant weather is often from December to April, when it’s slightly cooler and less humid.
- Crowds: The peak tourist season in Punta Cana is during the winter months (December through February) when travelers flock to the area to escape colder climates. If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons (April to June and September to November.)
- Pricing: If you’re looking for the best deals, summer and early fall can be the most cost-effective times to visit Punta Cana, as this is the off-peak season. However, keep in mind that this period coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season (June through November), so there is a higher chance of rain and storms.

When Is Hurricane Season In Punta Cana?
Hurricane season in Punta Cana, as with the rest of the Atlantic region, runs from June 1 through November 30. During this time, there is a higher chance of tropical storms and hurricanes, though they are most likely to occur between August and October.
However, it’s worth noting that while the risk is increased during these months, hurricanes are not a common occurrence. Modern weather forecasting also gives significant advance notice of any potential hurricanes, allowing for precautions to be taken. Nevertheless, if you’re planning a trip during hurricane season, it’s wise to consider travel insurance that covers weather-related disruptions.
Remember to always check weather updates and travel advisories in the period leading up to and during your visit.
What Is The Weather In Punta Cana?
Punta Cana has a tropical climate, meaning it experiences warm temperatures throughout the year, typically ranging from the mid-70s to the high 80s Fahrenheit (24 to 31 degrees Celsius). Still, it’s cooler and drier from December to April, with hotter, more humid weather the rest of the year.
What To Pack For Punta Cana?
Packing for Punta Cana should take into account its tropical climate, beach, and resort life, as well as any planned excursions. Here are some essentials:
- Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable clothes. Think of sundresses, shorts, tank tops, and t-shirts. For gentlemen, shirts or T-shirts with sleeves and long pants or formal Bermuda shorts are required at restaurants. A light sweater or jacket can be handy for cooler evenings.
- Swimwear: Don’t forget your bathing suit for enjoying the beautiful beaches and resort pools. A cover-up or sarong can be useful too.
- Footwear: Sandals and flip-flops are perfect for the beach, while water shoes can be helpful for certain water-based activities. Also, pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes for any sightseeing or excursions, and if you plan to go horseback riding you will need closed-toe shoes.
- Accessories: A broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle are important for sun protection and hydration.
- Sunscreen and Bug Repellent: Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from the strong Caribbean sun, be sure to choose one that’s safe for the environment. Also, even though many resorts spray to control insects, it’s wise to bring bug repellent.
- Beach Bag or Daypack: A beach bag can carry your essentials while lounging by the sea or pool. If you’re planning on doing day trips, a daypack might be more suitable.
- Dressier Clothing: If you plan to dine in upscale restaurants or attend special events, some formal wear might be required.
- Snorkel Gear: If you plan to snorkel, you may want to bring your own gear, though many tour operators provide this. But do be aware that snorkeling at most area beaches isn’t great, you’ll want to book an excursion if you want to see reef life.
- Travel Documents: Don’t forget your passport, driver’s license, credit cards, and travel insurance information.
Best Things To Do In Punta Cana
1) Play Or Lounge At Punta Cana Beaches
Bavaro Beach
Bávaro Beach, located in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, stretches for about 10 kilometers (over 6 miles) along the east coast of the island and is where you find most of the island’s most desirable resorts. This long span of beach is known for its soft, white sand and clear, shallow waters.
Bávaro Beach is part of the Costa del Coco, or Coconut Coast, and it’s surrounded by an abundance of coconut palms, adding to its tropical appeal.
In terms of activities, Bávaro Beach offers a range of options. Water sports, including kayaking and windsurfing, are popular here. For those interested in marine life, there is a coral reef with great snorkeling, but it’s not near the resorts. You’ll want to book an excursion to get to where you can see anything.
The beach is lined with a variety of all-inclusive resorts, each offering its own restaurants, bars, and recreational amenities. These range from luxury resorts to more budget-friendly options.
Bávaro Beach is also dotted with local shops selling crafts, clothing, and beach essentials. There are several beachfront eateries and bars that offer a taste of local cuisine and drinks. Despite its popularity, there are sections of Bávaro Beach that are relatively quiet and less crowded, providing a more relaxed atmosphere for visitors.
Macao Beach
Macao Beach is a public beach located in the northern part of Punta Cana, about a 30-minute drive from most resorts, with the exception of the new Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana. Unlike many other beaches in the area that are owned by resorts, Macao Beach is easily accessible to all visitors.
This beach is well-regarded for its wide stretch of sand, which is coarser and more golden in color than many of the other beaches in Punta Cana. The waves at Macao Beach are larger and stronger, making it a popular spot for surfing and boogie boarding. Surf lessons and board rentals are available for those interested.
There are several small local eateries, referred to as “paradors”, near the beach where you can try traditional Dominican food. These establishments offer fresh seafood dishes, along with other local favorites.
Despite these amenities, Macao Beach has a more remote and less commercial feel than many of the other beaches in Punta Cana.
In terms of activities, aside from surfing with Macao Surf Camp, Macao Beach is known for its off-road buggy tours, which provide an exciting way to explore the surrounding countryside. These tours often include a stop at Macao Beach for a swim or surf.
What most tours won’t show you is that there is a secret beach, accessible by a trail that’s now closed to the public due to construction. But if you ask at La Doña Restaurant (the open-air restaurant on the far right end of the beach if you’re facing the water,) it’s possible to arrange a guided trip to Playa Escondida, the Secret Beach.

Uvero Alto
Uvero Alto Beach is located in the northern part of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. It’s situated further from the Punta Cana International Airport compared to other popular beaches, making it a bit more secluded and quieter.
This beach features darker sand that ranges from brown to golden. The water at Uvero Alto is typically clear, although it can be a bit rougher compared to other beaches in Punta Cana, making it less ideal for snorkeling but suitable for other water activities such as surfing or boogie boarding.
Uvero Alto Beach is home to a mix of luxury resorts, including Nickelodean Hotels & Resorts, and smaller boutique hotels. These resorts often provide beach chairs and umbrellas for their guests. There are also a few beachfront restaurants and bars, mostly linked to the resorts.
Unlike more developed beaches like Bávaro, Uvero Alto retains a more untouched and natural feel, which can be a plus for visitors looking for a tranquil, less crowded beach experience. However, it also means there are fewer facilities and amenities outside of the resorts.
As with most beaches in Punta Cana, Uvero Alto is lined with palm trees, providing natural shade and adding to the overall tropical beach atmosphere.
It’s worth noting that Uvero Alto Beach is part of the wider Coconut Coast, and there are several coconut vendors in the area where visitors can try fresh coconut water.
2) Explore National Parks and Ecological Reserves
The national parks of Punta Cana are yet another highlight. Nestled between the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and verdant landscapes, these parks offer a respite from the bustling beaches and a chance to explore the Dominican Republic’s diverse flora and fauna.
Jump Into A Cenote At Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve
Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve, also known as the Ojos Indigenas Ecological Park and Reserve, is a private protected area located in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The reserve is owned and operated by the Puntacana Ecological Foundation.
The reserve covers an area of about 1,500 acres and features a network of trails leading to 12 freshwater lagoons, five of which visitors are allowed to swim in. The lagoons, or “eyes,” get their name from the Taino Indians who originally inhabited the island.
Trails are well-maintained, and paths continue outside the gate, where you pass the small but lovely Playa Blanca beach, and onto the nearby resorts.
However, a hefty entrance fee is required, and it’s worth noting that the reserve is located within a gated community, so access is controlled. Purchase admission at the entrance to Punta Cana Resort before driving another couple more miles to the parking lot serving both the Ecological Reserve and the Swim Horse Punta Cana facilities.
Face Thrills At A Natural Theme Park
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, be sure to visit Scape Park. Situated in Cap Cana, this natural theme park offers a multitude of activities, including zip-lining, cave expeditions, and eco-tours. While there, don’t miss the Hoyo Azul, a hidden cenote at the foot of a cliff, boasting crystal clear blue waters. Do remember, there is an entrance fee to the park, but the experiences it offers are worth every penny.
The park is open every day, and the entrance fee varies depending on the activities chosen. There are package options available that include transportation, guides, and meals.
3) Challenge Skills At Punta Cana Golf Courses
Punta Cana, located on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, is a haven for golfers with its spectacular courses. Here are some of the top golf courses in Punta Cana:
- Punta Espada Golf Course: This Jack Nicklaus signature course is consistently rated as one of the best in the Caribbean. Punta Espada is an 18-hole, par 72 course that offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
- Corales Golf Course: Designed by Tom Fazio, this 18-hole course is part of the Puntacana Resort and Club. It’s known for its challenging final three holes, known as the “Devil’s Elbow,” which play along the coastline.
- La Cana Golf Course: Another course within the Puntacana Resort and Club, La Cana was designed by P.B. Dye. It features 27 holes spread over three nines, with 14 of the holes offering ocean views.
- Iberostar Bavaro Golf Club: Designed by P.B. Dye, this 18-hole course is located within the Iberostar Resort. The course is known for its challenging features, including undulating fairways, well-placed bunkers, and lakes.
- Hard Rock Golf Club: This 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Located at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the course offers a mix of challenging and forgiving holes, making it suitable for golfers of all skill levels.

Remember that many of these courses are part of resorts, so it’s worth checking the specific rules and fees for non-guests if you’re not staying at the associated property.
4) Snorkel & Scuba Diving
Punta Cana, renowned for its pristine beaches and azure waters, is also a premier destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The vibrant underwater world, teeming with a rich diversity of marine life, corals, and mesmerizing underwater sites, offers plenty of opportunities for both novice and experienced divers.
We booked both scuba and snorkeling excursions with Dressel Divers, and not only can we recommend the company, but they’ve also received the 2023 TripAdvisors’ Travelers Choice Award.
Catalina Island
Catalina Island, also known as Isla Catalina, is one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive near Punta Cana. A protected nature reserve, it hosts a myriad of marine species, providing an unparalleled opportunity to swim alongside colorful tropical fish, stingrays, and even sea turtles.
Scuba diving excursions often include a visit to the “Wall,” a popular dive site that plunges dramatically from 5 meters to over 40 meters. It’s an underwater spectacle with a dazzling array of corals, sponges, and a rainbow of fish. Snorkelers, on the other hand, will have a fantastic time exploring the shallower reefs closer to the shore.
Monica Wreck
Diving at the Monica Wreck is a must-do for any diving enthusiast visiting Punta Cana. This sunken ship, a 30-meter-long cargo vessel that sank in the 1920s, lies at a depth of about 10 meters. It’s an ideal spot for beginners to experience a wreck dive due to its relatively shallow depth.
Over the decades, the Monica Wreck has turned into a thriving artificial reef, housing various species of corals, sponges, and numerous fish, including angelfish, barracuda, and moray eels. The relatively clear waters usually offer good visibility, making it a great spot for underwater photography.
Remember, while both snorkeling and scuba diving provide amazing experiences, they require different levels of training and equipment. Scuba diving, particularly, requires certification or being accompanied by a certified instructor if you’re a beginner. Most excursion providers in Punta Cana offer courses and guided tours, ensuring that your underwater adventure is both safe and unforgettable.
5) Horse Back Riding
Horseback riding in Punta Cana is a popular activity that allows visitors to explore the region’s diverse landscapes. Several tour operators offer horseback riding experiences suitable for both novice and experienced riders. Tours typically last between two and three hours and provide an opportunity to ride along the area’s white sand beaches, through lush tropical forests, and past local villages.
Closed-toe shoes are advised, but otherwise, no equipment is usually necessary, and helmets are rarely required. Most resorts will book this, and other excursions, while tour operators typically provide pick-up and drop-off service from local hotels.
6) ATV Tours
ATV tours in Punta Cana offer an adventurous way to explore the Dominican Republic’s scenic landscapes. The tours are typically conducted in small groups and led by professional guides. A standard tour lasts approximately two to three hours, covering a diverse range of terrains from sandy beaches to dense tropical forests and rural countryside.
Many ATV tours provide a visit to Macao Beach or the Taino Ecological Park where you can take a refreshing dip in a freshwater cenote. In some cases, tours might also stop at a local marketplace or offer views of the scenic mountain range.
Equipment such as helmets and goggles are usually provided by the tour operators, and a brief safety training session is conducted before the tour begins. It’s important to note that drivers must typically be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The tours usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. For comfort and safety, participants are advised to wear clothes that can get dirty, as well as closed-toe shoes.

7) GO: Saona Island
A trip to Punta Cana is incomplete without visiting Saona Island, a breathtaking piece of land floating in the Caribbean Sea. Characterized by turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and lined with countless palm trees, Saona Island is a nature lover’s paradise. A day trip to this tropical haven promises plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and soaking in the vibrant Caribbean sun.
Saona Island, or Isla Saona, is a popular day trip destination for visitors in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The island is part of the East National Park, a nature reserve, and is renowned for its stunning beaches, clear waters, and diverse marine life.
The excursion to Saona Island typically begins with a bus ride from your hotel in Punta Cana to Bayahibe, a small fishing village where you’ll board a boat to the island. The boat ride often includes a stop at a natural swimming pool, a shallow sandbar in the sea where starfish can often be seen.
Alternatively, you can do what we did, which was to drive out to Bayahibe, where you can find a number of small boat operators eager to take you to Saona Island and/or Catalina Island.
Upon reaching Saona Island, visitors typically have several hours to relax on the beach, swim in the sea, or take part in activities such as volleyball. The beaches are lined with palm trees and the sand is soft and white. The waters surrounding Saona Island are home to a variety of fish, and snorkeling gear is often provided for those who want to explore.
A barbecue lunch is typically included in the trip, offering a variety of local foods. Drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are often included throughout the day as well.
In the afternoon, the return trip to Bayahibe is typically made via speedboat, providing a quicker and more exhilarating ride. From there, a bus will return you to your hotel in Punta Cana.
The duration of the excursion is usually a full day, from morning to late afternoon.
8) GO: La Romana
Embarking on a day trip from Punta Cana to La Romana provides a delightful escape from the beach and an opportunity to experience the rich culture and history of the Dominican Republic.
Begin your journey at Casa de Campo Resort, a 7,000-acre resort complex known for its world-class golf courses and pristine beaches. Spend your morning exploring the manicured gardens, indulge in a round of golf, or perhaps visit the marina with its impressive yachts and fine dining restaurants.
After a delicious lunch at one of the resort’s exquisite restaurants, make your way to Altos de Chavón, a meticulously crafted 16th-century Mediterranean village replica perched above the Chavón River. Here, you can explore cobbled streets, admire the architectural elegance of the St. Stanislaus Church, visit the archaeological museum, or take in a concert at the 5,000-seat amphitheater.
