The Tillary in Brooklyn NY: Boutique on Flatbush Ave

Last Updated on

On a very busy corner (Tillary St. and Flatbush Ave), the Tillary Hotel – its rather pedestrian exterior belying a cool interior – is positioned about halfway between downtown Manhattan and the Barclay’s Center (roughly a mile in each direction) a few car-lengths away from the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. The modernist 174-room Tillary Hotel impresses with both bright stylish chambers and subdued man-cave hues of charcoal, black and about thirty shades of grey.

According to interior designer cl-oth interiors, The Tillary “brings in a sense of place,” melding “industrial Brooklyn with glamorous Manhattan.” Many design ideas were hatched while meandering through Brooklyn museums and from the neighborhood’s 19th century architecture.

There were plenty of European guests when I stayed mid-week in frigid January. But I heard that The Tillary is being discovered by trend and value conscious Americans looking for lodging within walking distance of Barclays Center and a quick Uber into SoHo.

First Impressions of The Tillary Hotel

The lobby – a mélange of gold and navy blue mid-century modern and contemporary furniture and lighting – is an about face from the monotonically silver-grey exterior.

The floor – oiled hexagonal wood tiles – lends a textural, rustic air, and gives the impression that you’re walking on a forest of crosscut trees. This is juxtaposed with the industrial poured concrete reception desk and a staircase that rises to the second floor Beer Garden.

Antique Mural Elevator Dazzler Brooklyn Hotel NY

Elevator walls are plastered with scenes from an enlarged antique Brooklyn postcard, representing the area in the early 1900’s, when horse and buggies, motorcars and trolleys were prevalent modes of transportation, and smokestacks ruled the skyline.

Rooms at The Tillary Hotel

Corner Executive Suite, Dazzler Brooklyn Hotel NY

Standard rooms are sizeable enough for a large bed and suitcase, but to get the most Brooklyn out of a stay, book the corner 450 sq ft. Executive Suite. Deep grey walls dramatically set off a sitting room with pull out couch and 180-degree corner view of mesmerizing street scenes outside a dramatic Frette linen bedroom. Furniture is sleek, with hand-woven jute rug –in grey hues, fringed – resembling an antique Oriental Carpet in today’s muted colors.

Bathrooms are large – with grey-veined white marble tiles, Frette towels, rain shower and Bigelow products.

Fitness Room, Dazzler Brooklyn Hotel

A state-of-the-art fitness center in the basement, with spinning bikes, a bank of treadmills, and a whole room devoted to weight-lifting, is one of the largest I’ve ever seen in a hotel of this size.

Breakfast at Dazzler Brooklyn Hotel

A cold Continental Breakfast is complementary with the room, served in a sundrenched coffee shop.
